New at SportFits: Wheat

Children don't ask whether the weather is right – they want to get out into the snow. Wheat from Denmark makes clothing for exactly that, with hand-drawn prints and calm colours. Its winter collection is now available at SportFits: snowsuits, ski sets of jacket and trousers, puffer jackets, fleece and knitwear.

From Denmark: wheat fields and floral prints

Wheat was founded in 2002 by Charlotte and Peter Galsgaard. The name comes from Denmark's summer wheat fields. The first hand-drawn prints of flowers, leaves and animals appeared in the same year, inspired by forest, coast and meadow and by children's books such as "The Children of Noisy Village". Thermal wear followed in 2012. Today the range goes from baby sizes up to around twelve years.

Snowsuits: one piece, no snow down the back

For toddlers and nursery age, a snowsuit is usually the simplest solution. There is no gap between jacket and trousers for snow to get down the back while sledging, and in the morning there is only one zip to do up.

The Snowsuit Miko is designed for children aged roughly four to eight. With a 22,000 mm hydrostatic head and a fleece lining, it is made for snow, slush and wet grass; elastic foot straps keep the legs in place. The Snowsuit Adi, with a detachable hood, and the Snowsuit Moe Tech, with a detachable faux-fur trim on the hood, are built in a similar way.

The Wintersuit Ludo is insulated with 3M Thinsulate Featherless and has a 25,000 mm hydrostatic head. The Ski Suit Melte is made for a day on the slopes, with wide legs and detachable braces. All suits have reflective logos or prints.

Ski set: jacket and trousers

From school age, jacket and trousers are often more practical. At ski school or in the mountain hut, a jacket comes off faster than a whole suit, and if your child grows taller faster than wider, you may only need to replace the trousers.

The Ski Trousers Runno have detachable braces, an adjustable waist and a 20,000 mm hydrostatic head. Their 8,000 g/m² breathability suits children who sweat between the lift and a snowball fight. They go with the ski jackets Snowy, Slopo and Sneen, which have the same ratings: all three are windproof with a snow skirt, and the Snowy also has an adjustable hood and waist.

Puffers for everyday wear

For the school run and town, Wheat makes puffer jackets that are less technical than its skiwear.

The Puffer Coat Yrsa is a longer coat with a 20,000 mm hydrostatic head and a zip that children can easily do up themselves. The Puffer Jacket Eli has a detachable hood and an adjustable waist; the Puffer Jacket Vinteren has a corduroy puffer design with a detachable faux-fur trim. Both are rated at 8,000 mm, enough for snow and drizzle. For the transitional seasons, there is the Lakas Puffer Vest, a light gilet with a reflective strip on the zip.

Fleece and knitwear for underneath

In winter, warmth comes mainly from the layers under the jacket. The Zip Fleece Milla is a hooded fleece jacket with a full-length zip: on mild days your child can wear it on its own, in winter under the ski or puffer jacket. The Jacquard Knit Harper is a jumper containing wool and is better suited to everyday wear than to going under a ski suit. How to combine layers is explained in Master the art of layering: the onion look.

Who is Wheat for?

Wheat suits you if you are looking for winter clothing that is technically sound but doesn't look like it came from a sports shop. The calm prints and colours are easy to combine, even across siblings. Wheat is not cheap: if you only ski one week a year and mainly look at the price, you will find cheaper alternatives or can rent.

Is Wheat right for your child?

  1. 1

If your child is still small and plays a lot in the snow

choose a snowsuit such as the Snowsuit Miko or the Snowsuit Adi

  2. 2

If your child goes to ski school

Ski Jacket Snowy, Slopo or Sneen with the Ski Trousers Runno

  3. 3

If you are looking for a jacket for the school run and town

a puffer jacket such as Yrsa, Eli or Vinteren

  4. 4

If you are missing a warm layer to wear underneath

    the Zip Fleece Milla

Right for you if …

you are looking for winter clothing for your child that works in the snow and can later be handed down to siblings.

Probably not for you if …

you only ski one week a year and mainly look at the price.

Care: making winter clothing last longer

Only wash ski and snow wear when necessary: a warm, damp cloth or airing it out is often enough, because frequent machine washing can reduce the waterproofing. If you do wash it, use 40 degrees maximum, no fabric softener and no tumble dryer. How to release fewer fibres into the wastewater is covered in Washing ski clothing: how to cut microplastic release.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Wheat come from?

From Denmark. Charlotte and Peter Galsgaard founded the brand in 2002. The name stands for Denmark's wheat fields.

Are Wheat snowsuits waterproof?

Miko and Adi have a 22,000 mm hydrostatic head and the Wintersuit Ludo 25,000 mm. That is enough for snow, slush and wet grass.

Snowsuit or ski jacket and ski trousers?

For small children, a one-piece is usually more practical because no snow gets down the back. For school children and ski school, jacket and trousers are more flexible.
