A designer who is a mother herself

The person behind Liewood is designer Anne Marie Lie Norvig, who worked in the fashion industry for around ten years. When she became a mother, she looked for things for her children that were both beautiful and practical, and couldn't find them. So in 2015 she founded her own brand in Copenhagen. The design follows the Scandinavian tradition: clean shapes, muted colours, playful patterns. Today the range includes shoes, toys and interior items for children as well as clothing.

Snow and ski: suit or jacket and trousers

For the snow there is the one-piece Maddy snowsuit and the set of Kalle jacket and Elina trousers. All three are lightly insulated, with a 12,000 mm hydrostatic head and taped seams.

The Maddy has braces on the inside: if it gets warm indoors, your child can take their arms out of the sleeves without taking the whole suit off. Foot straps keep the legs from riding up, and the suit comes in sizes 80 to 128.

The Kalle jacket has a snow skirt at the hem and a small sleeve pocket for a ski pass. The Elina trousers have detachable braces and are reinforced at the ankles, where ski boots rub.

A suit doesn't let snow in at the back and is often easier for small children. A jacket and trousers are more flexible, and the jacket can also be worn to school. For nursery-age children there is a lot to be said for the suit; for school-age children and ski lessons, the set is usually the better choice.

Down for cold days

For the walk to school and cold, dry days there are down jackets. The Adelina is a quilted jacket with a hood for children from 104 to 152, and a reflective logo on the back makes your child more visible in the dark. The Polle is designed for the youngest, from 68 to 116, and the Bille is the long version. Adelina and Polle are filled with down certified to the Responsible Down Standard (RDS).

If down stays wet, it loses warmth. For days in the slush the insulated suit is therefore often the better choice.

Pile fleece and balaclavas

Under the waterproof jacket, Liewood uses pile, a fluffy fleece that stays warm even when slightly damp and dries quickly. The Nolan jacket with a high collar and thumbholes comes in sizes 80 to 152 and can be worn on its own in autumn. On the Nolano all-in-one for babies and toddlers from 56 to 92, the cuffs fold over, so your child doesn't need separate mittens or booties.

Instead of a hat and scarf, there are balaclavas that cover the head, ears and neck in one piece. They don't slip, and there are no loose ends hanging down. The Theodor is made from pure wool and is the warmer option; the Hanibal with bear ears is made from organic cotton, an alternative for children who find wool too scratchy.

Winter boots for snow and slush

The Ania is a high, lined winter boot with a waterproof sole for snow and cold. The Zoey has a quilted, padded shaft and is water-repellent, so it is better suited to snow than to deep puddles. Both fasten with elastic laces and a toggle, which children can often manage themselves.

For mud and rain there are the Mason thermal boots with a teddy fleece lining. They are fully waterproof but let little air reach the foot.

Who is Liewood for?

Liewood suits you if you are looking for winter clothing for your child that works outdoors without looking like technical gear. The colours and patterns are part of the concept, and the technology is enough for the playground, the sledging hill and ski lessons. For lots of ski days in the high mountains, dedicated ski brands are the better choice, and if price is your main concern, you will find more affordable alternatives.

Finding the right size

Clothing sizes are based on body height in centimetres. For jackets, go at most one size up, and only if there is still room for a fleece layer underneath. With boots, Liewood already builds in growing room: 1.5 cm up to size 28 and 1 cm from size 29. So measure your child's longer foot and order the size shown in the size chart, not one size up.
