Messi or Ronaldo: who really is the GOAT?

For almost two decades, the football world has argued over the same question, and the debate is not getting any quieter: Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo? This is more than a comparison of two careers. It is a clash of beliefs that flares up again in every pub, classroom and comments section.

The 2026 World Cup gives the debate a special edge. For the first time ever, both are taking the pitch at their sixth World Cup, a record nobody before them has achieved. Messi is 38, Ronaldo 41. It is almost certainly the last major stage on which they will appear together.

The real gap only emerges when you look beyond goals. In assists, the difference is greater: by Opta's criteria, Messi has around 414 assists to Ronaldo's approximately 261. That makes Messi not only a finisher, but also by far the better creator: playmaker and goalscorer in one.

At the end of a career, for many there is only one thing that counts: what is in the trophy cabinet. Here too, the picture is mixed, but the trend is clear.

In terms of total team trophies, Messi leads Ronaldo with 46 to around 34. Messi has won more domestic league titles and, above all, the one trophy that eluded Ronaldo. Ronaldo, meanwhile, has one more Champions League title (five to four), including three in a row with Real Madrid, an achievement for the ages on European club football’s biggest stage.

So those who value titles above all else will find strong arguments for Messi, but Ronaldo’s dominance in the Champions League cannot be ignored.

There are two points at which the debate swings decisively for many people. The first is the Ballon d'Or, football's most important individual award. Here, Messi leads 8–5. Journalists have named him the world's best player eight times, and no one else comes close to that tally.

The second point is the World Cup. For a long time, it was Messi's biggest omission, the argument Ronaldo fans would point to. Then came 2022: Messi led Argentina to the title, was awarded the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player and filled the final gap in his career. Ronaldo is still waiting for that triumph with Portugal.

Ronaldo does have a counterweight, however, in the overall international record: with 143 international goals, he tops the world ranking of all international players, ahead of Messi's 120. Messi may be the more efficient player at club level, but when it comes to international goals, Ronaldo is simply the number one in history.

Numbers explain the what, not the how. And the how is where the real appeal of this duel lies, because these are two utterly different footballers.

Ronaldo is the athletic maximalist. Leap, pace, two-footed finishing and an almost obsessive discipline that still allows him to score at the highest level at 41. His game is built for efficiency, his body a perfectly calibrated weapon.

Messi is the counterpoint. A low centre of gravity, extraordinary close control in the tightest spaces, and an instinct for space and passes that can barely be captured in data. Where Ronaldo overwhelms, Messi unlocks. One is the machine, the other the artist.

If even the numbers do not allow a clear verdict, it is worth looking at those who know football from the inside. The list of those who have spoken out is impressive, from World Cup winners and legendary managers to former teammates. The majority lean towards Messi, though almost always with great respect for Ronaldo.

Right now, while this World Cup is under way, the pair may be writing the final shared chapter of their rivalry. And their starts could hardly have been more different.

Messi made a statement with a hat-trick in the 3–0 win over Algeria and has Argentina among the favourites. Ronaldo's Portugal, by contrast, could only manage a 1–1 draw against DR Congo and slipped down the power rankings. The next group matches will show whether both can win their groups as expected.

The two have never faced each other in a World Cup knockout match. Should it happen in 2026, the GOAT debate would suddenly have a sporting referee: 90 minutes, one match, one winner. Not even the smartest data model would be immune to the force of a moment like that.

As a pure goalscorer and a symbol of discipline and longevity, he is unmatched. In a universe without Messi, Ronaldo would be the undisputed GOAT.

But in this universe, Lionel Messi exists. And that is precisely why, however controversial it may be, our choice is number 10.
