Warm all day
Layer up: ready for whatever autumn brings
Dress smart and you'll get through the day without freezing or sweating, from your morning workout to your evening walk.

How it works
Three layers for any autumn weather
In autumn the weather often changes several times a day: frosty in the morning, mild at lunchtime and a shower in the afternoon. A single warm jacket is then usually too much or not enough.
With pieces that work together, you adapt your clothing to the weather. You put on or take off whatever you need at the moment and stay dry and warm.

Layer 1 · Base layer
Dry against your skin
The base layer fits close to the body and wicks sweat away from your skin. Cotton can't do that: it soaks up moisture and stays wet. Merino wool and synthetic fibres are therefore the better choice.
How warm a base layer is depends on the fabric weight in grams per square metre (g/m²): the higher the number, the thicker and warmer the fabric.

Layer 2 · Midlayer
The warmth in between
The midlayer keeps the warmth close to your body. It can be a fleece or knitted jacket, a warm jumper or a vest. Because this is the layer you put on and take off most often, a full-length zip is worth having. Fleece isn't windproof, though, so when the wind picks up, the shell goes on top.
Fleece also comes in three weights: 100, 200 and 300. The higher the number, the thicker and warmer the fabric.

Layer 3 · For rain and wind
The shell
The shell keeps out wind and rain. When buying one, make sure it packs down small, because on autumn days it belongs in your backpack just in case, even if the sun is shining in the morning.

Layer 3 · The alternative for cold days
Down or synthetic instead of a shell
When it gets really cold, an insulated jacket replaces the shell as the outer layer. If it stays dry, down is the warmest choice, whereas synthetic insulation does better in the wet.
How well a down jacket keeps you warm is shown by its fill power in cuin: the higher the value, the more the down lofts and the more warmth it holds.

The small extras
Head, neck and hands
A beanie, scarf and gloves weigh next to nothing, yet they make a big difference when it's still chilly in the morning or cools down quickly in the evening. The idea that you lose half your body heat through your head is a myth, but a beanie is still worth it as a small extra layer.

Layering for kids
Quick on, quick off
Kids run around, stop and dash off again. That's why their clothes need to be especially easy to put on and take off, ideally without help. The right layers and well-thought-out details make that possible, so they're never too warm or too cold.
