In 1980, Gerald Kampel and Jürgen Wegner built the Ortovox F2 in Taufkirchen near Munich, the first avalanche transceiver to search on both frequencies in use at the time. That device grew into a brand that names protection as its most important value.
Ortovox has worked with wool since 1988, from merino tops to insulated jackets with Swisswool or Metawool. Then there are packs with their own safety compartment, such as the Free Rider, Venet Tour and Traverse, and the emergency equipment: transceivers like the Diract Voice and Focus Voice, probes, shovels, first aid kits and bivvy bags. Since 2008 the brand has run avalanche courses with mountain guides in its Safety Academy. Ortovox has been part of the Schwan-STABILO group since 2011.
