How thick should your merino be?

The number in the name is the fabric weight. This is what 120, 150, 185 and 230 g/m² look like on average.

Pace and sweating

If you climb quickly, you generate plenty of heat and sweat. A lightweight fabric is then more comfortable, even in winter: Ortovox specifically recommends the 120 Competition Light for high-intensity tours in summer and winter.

If you take it easy or get cold quickly during breaks, 185 or 230 is the better choice.

Merino, TENCEL and polyamide
  • According to Ortovox, 185 Rock'n'wool and 185 Merino are made from 100% merino.
  • 120 Cool Tec, 140 and 150 Cool contain TENCEL™ lyocell, which according to Ortovox absorbs sweat.
  • Polyamide makes 120 Competition Light, 120 Tec and 230 Competition more hard-wearing.

Is Merino itchy?

Ortovox describes its Merino wool as soft and itch-free against the skin. How a fabric feels is still personal; lighter weights like 120 and 230 sit directly against your skin.

Can I wear a Merino shirt for several days?

Ortovox says Merino wool helps prevent odours, especially on long days in the mountains. How long it stays comfortable depends on you and the tour.
