How the calculation works
The assistant knows three material groups and three tasks. The advice sums up common manufacturer recommendations: membrane jackets like a technical wash and a thorough rinse, down needs a dedicated wash and full drying, and merino only takes a wool cycle.
On hardshells, heat reactivates the water-repellent finish on the surface. Many membrane makers recommend a low tumble setting or careful ironing for this, if the label allows it.
How to read the result
The recommendation is a short routine for the task you picked. Your product's care label always comes first, because brands finish their fabrics differently.
Fabric softener and ordinary powder detergent are usually off limits for technical clothing. They can clog the fabric and interfere with the water repellency.

How often should I wash my rain jacket?
When it is visibly dirty or water stops beading. Sweat and skin oils hurt the water repellency more than regular washing does.
Why is my down jacket lumpy after washing?
Because it is still damp. Down takes a long time, often several low tumble cycles, before it fluffs up again.
Do I need to wash merino often?
No. Merino holds on to odours less. Airing it overnight is often enough.
