The right X-Bionic first-layer system for winter sports: which baselayer is right for me?

Energy Accumulator, Invent, Symbio Merino or Radiactor? Find out which X-Bionic baselayer suits your activity, intensity and warmth requirements, plus Ski Anatomix for your ski boots.

The essentials at a glance

  1. 01

There is no single best baselayer. The right choice depends on your activity, intensity, temperature and personal sense of warmth.

  2. 02

Energy Accumulator 4.0 is the performance model with targeted compression, while Invent is the versatile option with less pressure on the skin.

  3. 03

Symbio Merino uses merino wool, while Radiactor 4.0 uses heat-reflective yarn for very cold days.

  4. 04

The first layer does not end at the trousers: Ski Anatomix continues the system inside your ski boot.

Why your first layer can make or break your ski day

The first layer sits directly against your skin. It is the layer that absorbs sweat first and retains or releases heat first. Your midlayer and jacket can only work as well as this bottom layer allows.

At the mountain, your level of exertion is constantly changing. You work hard on the descent, sit still on the lift and cool down in the mountain hut. A good baselayer wicks moisture away during active periods, so it does not chill you during breaks. Cotton is not very good at this: it absorbs moisture and stays wet.

The four X-Bionic lines mainly differ in how much they compress, how much warmth they retain and what they are made of.

The first layer as a system: from collar to foot

Shirt, trousers and socks work as one layer

A warm upper body is of little help if your legs are cold or your feet become damp inside your boots. That is why it makes sense to think of the first layer as a system. X-Bionic offers matching trousers for every shirt, either full-length or in a 3/4 length.

The 3/4-length trousers end below the knee. This means that only the sock touches your skin inside the ski boot, with no second layer of fabric to crease. Full-length trousers keep you warm down to the ankle and are suitable for cross-country skiing, ski touring or winter hiking.

The sock completes the system. It also helps determine how directly you feel the ski.

Energy Accumulator 4.0: for maximum performance

Energy Accumulator 4.0: close-fitting with targeted compression

The Energy Accumulator 4.0 is designed for ambitious winter sports enthusiasts who move at speed and spend long days on skis. It fits closely and uses targeted compression, meaning light pressure on the muscles that feels stable and performance-oriented.

According to X-Bionic, its key feature is the 3D Bionic Sphere® System with ThermoSyphon®: it is intended to keep you warm in cold conditions and cool you during exertion, keeping your body temperature as close as possible to 37 °C. Expansion Ribs® keep the joints warm without restricting movement. Sweat Traps catch sweat where it flows most heavily.

If you frequently switch between full exertion and breaks, the Energy Accumulator plays to its strengths. If you do not like a close fit, Invent is the better choice. The compression is noticeable, and that is exactly the point.

Invent: versatile with less compression

Invent: close-fitting, but with less pressure on the skin

Invent is the all-rounder in the range. The cut is also slim and stretchy, but the compression is low. The shirt sits close to the body without feeling restrictive.

Invent also regulates temperature and sweat and is intended to keep you dry when you start to perspire. The material is lightweight, breathable and odour-neutralising. It is suitable for skiing and snowboarding, cross-country skiing, running and winter hiking.

For many people, Invent is a sensible entry point into technical baselayers. In very cold conditions, it reaches its limits sooner than Radiactor or Symbio Merino.

Symbio Merino: natural warmth next to your skin

Symbio Merino combines merino wool with the X-Bionic structure

Symbio Merino is for anyone who likes the feel of wool against the skin. According to the manufacturer, the women's shirt consists of 84% mulesing-free merino wool, combined with polypropylene and elastane. The cut is Regular Fit, so it is slightly looser than Energy Accumulator and Invent.

Merino absorbs moisture without immediately feeling wet and still provides noticeable warmth. Another advantage becomes apparent after a day of skiing: wool inhibits odours, so the shirt stays fresh for longer. This is practical for a week of skiing with limited luggage.

At very high intensity, merino dries more slowly than synthetic fibres. If you sweat heavily, Energy Accumulator or Invent is often the better choice.

Radiactor 4.0: for very cold days

Radiactor 4.0: heat-reflective for very cold days

Radiactor 4.0 is designed for freezing temperatures and for anyone with a high need for warmth. Its special feature is Xitanit® 2.0, a heat-reflective yarn. According to X-Bionic, it reflects some of the body's heat back towards the skin instead of allowing it to escape.

Radiactor shares its base with the Energy Accumulator. It also features Core Insulation, which keeps the torso specifically warm. Despite the additional warmth, the system continues to regulate moisture and retains freedom of movement.

Radiactor is particularly worthwhile for icy lift rides, long breaks and shaded slopes in the depths of winter. For most people, it is too warm on mild spring days.

The overview shows what each model is designed for. Ultimately, your body decides: if you get cold easily, choose a warmer option. If you warm up quickly, choose the lighter model. Our X-Bionic brand world shows all models at a glance, including a finder to help you choose the right baselayer.

It is also important what you wear over it. A warm baselayer under a heavily insulated ski jacket can be too much on sunny days. Heat then builds up, you sweat and the moisture cools you down on the next lift ride. The warmer the first layer, the lighter the midlayer can be.

Size also matters. A baselayer that is too large does not sit against the skin and wicks sweat less effectively. Use the size chart for the relevant line, as the cuts differ.

Ski Anatomix: the first layer inside your ski boot

Ski Anatomix: second-skin fit for your ski boots

Every millimetre matters inside a ski boot. A sock that slips or creases quickly creates pressure and rubs the skin. Ski Anatomix is designed to prevent exactly that. The sock was developed together with ski champion Marco Odermatt.

The anatomical fit sits like a second skin. Targeted padding zones protect against pressure points, while ventilation channels wick away moisture. With less material between your foot and the boot, you feel the ski more directly. X-Bionic calls this a more precise “Snow Feel”.

If you prefer wool on your feet too, the Ski Anatomix Merino OTC is a merino version.

Frequently asked questions

What is a first layer?

The first layer, also known as a baselayer, is the bottom layer of clothing, worn directly against the skin. It wicks sweat outwards and helps keep your body temperature stable. The midlayer and jacket go on top.

How close-fitting should a baselayer be?

Close-fitting, so it can absorb moisture directly. Whether you also want compression is a matter of personal preference: Energy Accumulator fits noticeably tighter, Invent sits close without feeling restrictive, and Symbio Merino has a slightly looser cut.

Is merino or synthetic fibre better for skiing?

Both have their strengths. Merino provides comfortable warmth and stays fresh for longer, but dries more slowly when you sweat heavily. Synthetic models such as Energy Accumulator and Invent wick moisture away faster and are suitable for high-intensity activity.
