Which hiking shoe is right for you depends above all on when and where you are out. So we present three adidas Terrex models: the Freehiker 3 Ultra as a brisk all-rounder of the current generation, the Freehiker 2 and the Skychaser AX5 Mid. The last two come with CLIMAWARM+ and are made for the cold season. All three have a GORE-TEX membrane.
For the Freehiker 3, adidas Terrex states the aim “one shoe for every adventure”: first-class comfort, reliable weather protection and performance on any terrain, according to the brand. Technically, this comes down to HYPERBOOST PRO cushioning foam, combined with a DREAMSTRIKE+ midsole and a Continental outsole.

The Freehiker 3 Ultra is the top model of the Freehiker 3 range. Instead of classic laces, it uses a Speed Lacing system that closes and opens with a single pull. Add the GORE-TEX membrane and the DREAMSTRIKE+ midsole with HYPERBOOST PRO cushioning, which according to adidas returns energy with every step. The Continental outsole provides grip, wet or dry. The other models of the range, Low and Mid, are currently not available from us.
The higher, close-fitting collar stands out: according to first tests, it sits around the ankle like a cuff and protects better against dirt and scree than a classic low shoe. That makes the Freehiker Ultra a fit for anyone on multi-day trips or hiking with heavier packs. For a quick after-work trail, it is probably more shoe than you need.

Freehiker 2 GORE-TEX CLIMAWARM+: warm and waterproof
The Freehiker 2 is the predecessor of the current Freehiker 3 generation and is in our range as a waterproof hiking shoe for cold days. The GORE-TEX membrane keeps moisture out, and CLIMAWARM+ technology keeps your feet warm even at low temperatures. A BOOST midsole provides the cushioning, and you tighten it with a quick-lacing system. According to the product information, it is made for hiking, travel and everyday use.
The trade-off: according to the manufacturer, it weighs around 560 grams per shoe, and the insulation makes it the wrong choice in summer or on sweaty climbs.

Skychaser AX5 Mid GORE-TEX CLIMAWARM+: more support in the cold

It also has a GORE-TEX membrane, plus CLIMAWARM+ and PrimaLoft insulation for cold, damp days. LIGHTMOTION cushioning is meant to give a light, responsive feel, and there is a Continental outsole as well.
According to the manufacturer, it weighs 475 grams per shoe (size 42 2/3) and is currently available in two colours. The women’s model with the same features weighs around 420 grams according to the manufacturer (size 42 2/3) and also comes in two colours.
