Ternua: Circular Design Meets Strong Value for Money

The Basque outdoor brand ties together circular design, technical performance and fair prices. Worth a closer look.

Who is behind Ternua?

Ternua comes from the Basque Country, a region where rough coastline, green mountains and a deep-rooted closeness to nature shape everyday life. The brand was founded there as an outdoor outfitter and has since specialised in functional clothing for hiking, trekking, mountaineering and travel.

What sets Ternua apart from many rivals is that sustainability is not bolted on afterwards. It has sat inside product development for years. You see it in material choices, and you see it in a B Corp certification held since July 2024, with a B Impact score of 95.7 points. For context, the threshold for certification is 80.

Ternua sells in more than 60 countries. Even so, it stays less visible than the big names across much of Europe. That is precisely what makes it interesting to a certain kind of buyer: if you want outdoor clothing with substance and you would rather not default to the first brand you know, there is depth here.

Value: substance, not a budget play

Ternua is not a cheap brand. The value argument works differently here: technically ambitious products with well-considered materials, at prices that often sit below the established premium labels.

The Klimmer JKT makes the case nicely. It is a three-layer hardshell with a 20,000 mm water column and breathability of 20,000 g/m²/24h, built with recycled polyester, a PFC-free finish and bluesign-approved fabric. The manufacturer's RRP is €279.95. For a fully technical shell with a sustainability claim behind it, that is a strong place to land.

One caveat matters here: good value does not mean nothing cheaper exists. If the lowest price is all you are after, you will find it elsewhere. But if you want serious performance for your days outside, you get strong technical kit here alongside a sustainability approach that holds up, without paying the premium many top brands charge for the same combination.

Sustainability as DNA, not a label

At product level this gets tangible. Ternua uses PFC-free DWR finishes, works with bluesign-approved fabrics and builds selected models as mono-material designs: products made from a single material type, which recycle far more easily.

The B Corp certification backs up the wider picture. Unlike many sustainability labels, B Lab does not assess individual products but the whole company: governance, environmental impact, social responsibility. Ternua sitting well clear of the threshold at 95.7 points is a strong signal, though not a free pass. Not every item in the range is automatically sustainable. The direction of travel is unmistakable.

Verdict: outdoor with a stance, without the surcharge

Ternua is not a brand that shouts. That is exactly what makes it interesting to a growing group: people who spend time outside and want to choose deliberately what they wear, without necessarily digging deeper into their pockets.

The mix of documented circular design, technical outdoor competence and an often gentler price position produces a profile that is not a given in today's market. The B Corp certification underpins the claim, and the product quality holds up to it.

None of which makes Ternua the best choice for everyone. If you are after absolute peak performance or the widest possible range, specialists will give you more. But for anyone who wants functional outdoor clothing with real sustainability behind it at a price that does not sting, Ternua earns a closer look.
