Royal Robbins: From Yosemite to everyday life

Climbing pioneers, clean climbing, timeless outdoor style. Now available at SportFits.

New at SportFits: Royal Robbins

Some brands want to be loud. Others simply get on with it. Royal Robbins belongs to the latter. Founded by two climbing legends in Yosemite National Park in the USA, the brand has stood for clothing that performs outdoors and in everyday life for more than 55 years.

At SportFits, you can now find a wide selection from the Royal Robbins range, from hard-wearing shorts and relaxed shirts to comfortable travel clothing. What all the pieces have in common: they are built to last, still look on trend after ten years and come without unnecessary fuss.

Timeless outdoor style with Yosemite DNA, from climbing shorts to travel shirts.

Who is behind Royal Robbins?

Royal Robbins, the man behind the brand, was one of the most influential climbers of the 20th century. Together with his wife Liz, he shaped the climbing scene in Yosemite Valley in the 1960s and established the concept of clean climbing: climbing without leaving traces in nature. No bolts in the rock, no pitons, only equipment that can be removed without a trace.

The company grew out of this mindset in 1968. As there simply was no clothing that met their standards, Royal and Liz designed their own pieces. The Billy Goat Short, named after what was then the hardest climbing grade in the Yosemite Decimal System, was the first climbing short ever made. It was so hard-wearing that it was later used by the FBI and rescue services, laying the foundations for the 5.11 Tactical brand.

What makes Royal Robbins special?

Royal Robbins is not a classic performance brand. You will not find hardshells for the Himalayas or trail running shoes here. Instead, the brand focuses on what it does best: comfortable, functional clothing for everyday outdoor life, whether travelling, hiking or simply relaxing at a café after your adventure.

Clean climbing as a design principle

The clean climbing mindset runs through everything Royal Robbins does. Less impact on nature, more respect for our environment. This is reflected in the materials, which are durable and repairable, and in the design: clean, understated and timeless, without oversized logos.

While other brands push out new collections every two seasons, Royal Robbins focuses on pieces that stay in your wardrobe for years.

Sustainability with substance

For Royal Robbins, sustainability is not a marketing label, but something measurable. 90% of the Spring 2026 collection is made with at least 75% sustainable fibres, including TENCEL Modal, organic cotton, recycled polyester and hemp. For Autumn 2026, the figure rises to 91%.

There is also MPT technology (Mechanical Protection Technology), named a Best Invention by Time in 2025: a tightly woven fabric that keeps mosquitoes at bay without chemicals. No permethrin, no treatment, just mechanical protection.

According to the brand, it is climate-neutral in Scopes 1 and 2 and is working with RWS-certified wool for its merino products.

Sustainability plays a central role in her life, which is why she values manufacturers that prioritise fair production conditions, sustainable innovation and recyclable materials, not as a trend but out of genuine responsibility and love for our planet. This principle also shapes her idea of "conscious travel": as a trained foreign language correspondent, nothing tops getting to know other cultures and faraway countries. Yet she believes that even short trips close to home can reveal impressive landscapes and panoramas. Alongside the environment, a healthy lifestyle is just as important to Chrissi. For her, this primarily means respecting your own body and doing it good through a balanced diet and regular exercise. Walks with her dog, challenging hikes, inline skating along the Danube and strength training are her personal route to inner balance and greater wellbeing. In the SportFits Magazine, she wants to inspire readers with these very perspectives and show how sustainably, actively and consciously everyday life can be shaped.
