Knowledge

Which standard is shown on the ski goggles?

DIN EN 174:2001-07 has been withdrawn. Its successor is DIN EN ISO 18527-1:2023-11, the German version of EN ISO 18527-1:2022. It covers downhill skiing and snowboarding goggles.

An older EN 174 specification on the model remains the documented original specification. The successor standard does not automatically turn it into a new certification.

What do S0 to S4 mean?

VLT refers to the proportion of visible light transmitted. A lower percentage means a darker lens. The category applies to the lens, not the frame colour.

Oakley’s manufacturer information gives these limits: S0 over 80 to 100%, S1 over 43 to 80%, S2 over 18 to 43%, S3 over 8 to 18% and S4 over 3 to 8%. Use the manufacturer’s category; don’t round limit values into another category yourself.

Lighter lenses may be suitable in low light, darker ones in strong sun. The specific situation, shade and changing weather all matter. A dark tint alone does not prove UV protection.

Interchangeable or photochromic lens?

An interchangeable system lets you fit a suitable lens. Before buying, check whether an additional lens is included and whether it suits your light conditions.

Photochromic lenses change their tint within the range specified by the manufacturer. Reaction behaviour and temperature play a role. The successor standard specifies additional measurements at 5 °C; this does not give a switching time for every model.

Polarisation and photochromic technology are different properties. Polarisation affects certain reflections, while photochromic technology changes the tint. A brand name or general technology paragraph does not prove that your variant has the feature.

How do you check the helmet and prescription glasses?

Try on the helmet and ski goggles together. The goggles should sit evenly without pressure points, and the ventilation channels should remain clear. General brand compatibility does not replace trying them on.

OTG means they are designed to be worn over prescription glasses. You’ll need to check whether your frames fit using your own glasses. Compatibility with an optical insert is a different feature.

Children need the right frame and strap size. Don’t transfer features from the adult version to the similarly named children’s model.

What helps prevent fogging?

Ventilation and an anti-fog coating can reduce fogging. They do not guarantee clear vision in every humidity and temperature. Don’t cover the ventilation with your helmet or clothing.

Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions. Dry the lens gently and don’t rub a wet inner lens dry. A damaged coating cannot be replaced by a feature name.

Which details belong to the variant?

Check the manufacturer SKU, lens name, contents and light transmission together. A model family may include fixed and photochromic lenses. Values for another colour are therefore not proof.

The selection clearly shows which details are missing. If a required standard or lens detail is missing, the model is not labelled as the Best Choice. Check these points in the shop and the manufacturer’s information before buying.

Frequently asked questions

Why are technical details missing for some models?

We only include clearly verified details for the specific model. If the reference is missing or sources contradict each other, the detail remains open. This prevents a model being labelled Best choice when the value is required for your answers.
