Buying advice

1. What do you need the jacket for?

The city, commute and everyday wear call for something different from a day hike in the uplands. If you spend a lot of time sitting, cycle or wait for the bus, you want a jacket that feels comfortable and is long enough. If you hike, you need one that stays waterproof under your rucksack and lets moisture out.

Almost everything else follows from this. That’s why the finder starts by asking how you’ll use it.

2. How many layers?
ConstructionTypical usesThicknessLimit
2 layers with liningCity, everyday wear, travelFeels soft and comfortableHeavier, dries more slowly
2.5 layersEmergency layer in your rucksack, cyclingLightweight, packs down smallLess suited to heavy rucksacks
3 layersHiking, mountains, long rainy daysAll fabrics bonded together, breathes wellStiffer, usually more expensive
3. How much hydrostatic head?

For outdoor use, 10,000 mm is a good starting point. You need more reserve if you walk in the rain for hours or a heavy rucksack presses on your shoulders, as pressure forces water through the fabric.

The number alone does not make a jacket waterproof. Taped seams, covered zips and a hood that moves with your head matter just as much. Every jacket on this page lists the hydrostatic head if the shop or manufacturer provides it.

4. Sweat, weight and fit
  • If you walk uphill, you get wet from the inside. Ventilation zips under the arms help more than any figure on the spec sheet.
  • Under 400 g, a jacket is easy to carry in your rucksack. Insulated city jackets often weigh considerably more.
  • A waterproof jacket is your outer layer. Try it with a fleece underneath and raise your arms: the sleeves should not ride up.

Frequently asked questions

Waterproof or water-repellent: what’s the difference?

Water-repellent means drops bead off the surface until the fabric eventually becomes saturated. Waterproof means a membrane or coating keeps water out, and the seams are taped. For proper rain, you need waterproof.

Why am I still wet under my jacket?

It’s usually sweat, not a leak. When you’re working hard, more moisture is produced than even a good membrane can move out, so it condenses on the inside. Slow down, open the ventilation zips and wear one less layer underneath.

2, 2.5 or 3 layers: what do I need?

For the city and everyday use, 2 layers with a lining are comfortable to wear. 2.5 layers are light and fit in any bag, handy as an emergency jacket in your rucksack. With 3 layers, all fabrics are bonded together. They suit long days in the rain with a rucksack.

How much hydrostatic head is enough?

For outdoor use, 10,000 mm is a good starting point. More headroom is worthwhile if you’re walking in the rain for hours, kneeling or carrying a heavy rucksack, as this increases pressure on the fabric. More isn’t automatically better, though: seams, zips and the water-repellent finish matter too.

How do I care for my waterproof jacket?

Wash it according to the care label, preferably with detergent for technical clothing and without fabric softener. Dirt and body oils weaken the water-repellent finish. Many manufacturers recommend applying some heat afterwards so the water beads off again. What the label on your jacket says is what counts.

Which size should I choose?

A waterproof jacket is your outermost layer, so there should be room for a fleece underneath. Raise your arms: the sleeves shouldn’t ride up. Check the brand’s sizing system, as some use UK sizes or clothing sizes. The size chart is on every product page.
