Knowledge

For moving or for stopping?

First clarify what you plan to do: hiking, ski touring or skiing. Then consider whether you need the jacket while moving or mainly when stopping. Your warmth needs, the wind and your other layers all belong together.

Synthetic fill alone does not prove that a jacket is suitable for active insulation. A jacket for high-sweat activity must be described as such. Choose a jacket for breaks based on its purpose; low weight alone does not answer your warmth needs.

Down and synthetic fill

Down and synthetic fills are different insulating materials. The specific construction, fill weight and moisture management also determine how you use a jacket.

A water-repellent outer fabric or hydrophobic down does not mean that the whole jacket is waterproof. For prolonged rain, you need an outer layer with documented rain protection. Follow the model's care and drying instructions.

What does fillpower tell you?

Loft, or fillpower, describes a property of down fill. The number is not a temperature rating or a complete warmth rating for the jacket. Fill weight, baffles, cut and other clothing also have an effect.

For a comparison, the test methods, edition and conditioning must be known and the same. EN 12130 distinguishes between methods. A blanket conversion between US and EU figures is no substitute. Without a test reference, the comparison remains open.

A gram is not always a gram

Fill weight in grams describes the mass of a jacket's filling and needs a reference size. Fabric weight in grams per square metre can describe the insulation of a particular zone. Total weight, meanwhile, is the mass of the whole jacket.

Do not convert these figures into one another. Do not transfer the fill of a men's jacket to the women's version or an adult specification to a children's model. The same names can also refer to different generations.

Features for the intended use

For tours, packability, accessible pockets and a suitable hood can be important. Check whether the hood should fit over or under the helmet. These specifications are different.

Try the jacket with your planned layers and, if applicable, your rucksack or climbing harness. A two-way zip and high-set pockets are only features of the model if they are explicitly stated.

How should you handle missing information?

Missing information means unknown. It proves neither that a feature is present nor that it is absent. To make a best choice, the required information for your answer path must be clarified.

Compare the price only after considering the intended use and fit. The price preview uses the selected available models; it promises neither a specific temperature nor an independent product test.

Frequently asked questions

Why are technical values missing for some models?

We only include clearly documented details for the specific model. If the reference is unclear or sources contradict each other, the detail remains open. This prevents a model being marked as the Best Choice when the value is needed for your answer path.
