Western Alps: a dry October window opens

Quick reads. Lasting takeaways.

Weather

A dry spell is settling over the western Alps. After a few showers today, Chamonix expects no rain on Monday or Tuesday, with highs around 19°C. Zermatt, at 1,600 metres, starts the morning near 7°C and reaches about 18°C by the afternoon. That gap catches people out. Set off in a fleece, stow it by mid-morning and keep a windproof shell for higher ground. Zermatt cools noticeably on Tuesday, so the best days are early in the week.
