The Microlight is the down jacket many people simply always have with them: on hut-to-hut treks, at the crag, on winter hikes and on the way to work. For autumn/winter 2026, Rab has reworked the whole family. At its heart is the Microlight Alpine with a hood. Around it there is a jacket without a hood, a thinner version for days on the move and a waterproof version for cold, wet days.

Microlight Alpine Hoody

Microlight Alpine: the jacket for almost everything

The Microlight Alpine is the hooded model and the heart of the family. It comes as the Microlight Alpine Hoody for women and for men. It is filled with 700 fill power down which, according to Rab, has a water-repellent finish. That helps in snowfall and a short shower.

The baffles vary in size: small under the arms so you can move freely, larger across the chest, back and shoulders where you need the warmth. The hood is adjustable and has a peak, and the sleeves are articulated. The jacket packs into its own pocket, which has a clip-in loop for your harness. According to Rab it weighs 428 grams (men's, size M).

In persistent rain it needs a rain jacket on top, and it is too thin for standing still for long in hard frost. For everything in between, it is the jacket you will reach for most often.

Microlight Shield: the first waterproof Microlight

For days when the weather turns: the Microlight Shield combines down with a waterproof shell. It comes as the Microlight Shield Jacket for women and for men. The fabric is a two-layer Pertex Shield with, according to the manufacturer, a 20,000 mm hydrostatic head. The zips and hand pockets are water-resistant, and the hood has a peak to keep rain off your face.

Inside is the same down as in the Alpine, 700 fill power with a water-repellent finish. So on cold, wet days you need one jacket instead of two. In return it is heavier: according to Rab 698 grams in men's size M.

The Microlight family

Without a hood or even lighter

The Microlight Jacket has the same down and the same fabric as the Alpine, just without a hood. It sits more comfortably under a rain jacket because nothing bunches up at the neck, and it looks more understated in town. It comes as the Microlight Jacket for women and for men.

The Microlighter is made for days when you keep moving. Here the down is worked into a thin sheet: the jacket is low-bulk, lighter and more breathable. It is less warm than the Microlight, but you won't overheat as quickly while walking. With a full-length zip there is the Microlighter Jacket for women and for men. To pull on over your head there is the Microlighter Pullover Hoody for women and for men.

Why Rab

Rab began in 1981 in an attic in Sheffield. Rab Carrington sewed down sleeping bags there, a craft he had learned in Buenos Aires. Down is still at the core of the brand: according to Rab, its sleeping bags are still filled and sewn by hand in Derbyshire. The Microlight joined in 2008 and, according to Rab, was designed for hard use from the very start.
