Karpos: Out into winter

Highlights from the brand from the Dolomites: the new Squall set for ski touring, the Lastei Active Plus for winter hiking and the Moiazza Retrò fleece for everyday life.

Karpos designs clothing for the mountains in Fonzaso, at the foot of the Dolomites. For this winter we have picked three highlights: one for ski touring, one for hiking and one for everyday life.

The campaign

Useless until you wear it

"This jacket is useless": that is how Karpos starts the winter. The idea is that freedom does not come with the gear, but with the decision to head out the door. A jacket on a hook keeps no one warm. Only outside, on the climb, on the ridge or in driving snow, does it show what it can do. "Free to keep going" has always been the brand's motto.

For everyone who has made the decision, here are the highlights of the season. You will find all models in the Karpos brand shop.

Squall: the set for demanding ski tours

When the mountain turns rough, your gear should not hold you back. Karpos developed the Squall set for days like these: jacket and pants made of three-layer nylon ripstop for technical ski tours, from climbing in heavy snowfall to descending in powder.

The Squall Jacket is available for men and for women. According to Karpos, the fabric withstands a 30,000 mm water column, and the seams are taped. The hood fits over a helmet, and underarm vent zips let heat out on steep climbs.

The matching Squall Pants (men, women) are made of the same fabric, with side vents and edge guards at the ankles against sharp ski edges.

Lastei Active Plus: warm on the move when winter comes

In autumn the morning air is already biting, while the midday sun still warms you. Later in the year, a pair of microspikes and a cleared forest road are enough for a winter hike. Both call for clothing that keeps you warm without making you sweat on the climb.

The Lastei Active Plus is that kind of jacket. It is available for women and for men. The insulation is a mix: PrimaLoft Silver Active on the sleeves, hood and sides, synthetic down in the middle. Pertex Quantum on the front and back keeps the wind out. According to Karpos, the shoulders, hood and lower part are made of waterproof material with a 20,000 mm water column, for snow and a short shower. At around 495 grams (men's, medium size) it packs small into any backpack.

Karpos developed the Lastei from its experience in the mountains, but it is just as much made for everyday life. The clean design does not stand out in the city, and it keeps you as warm on the way to work as on the trail.

Moiazza Retrò: fleece for trail and city

Not every day outside is a tour. For a walk after snowfall, the hut in the evening or the way to work, Karpos has the Moiazza Retrò: dense fleece with a vintage look, warm and comfortable.

The Moiazza Retrò Fleece for men and for women has a full-length zip, a chest pocket and two large front pockets. Wear it as a jacket or, in hard frost, as a warm layer under your shell. If you want your arms free, take the vest: the Moiazza Retrò Fleece Vest for men or the Moiazza Retrò Hoodie Vest for women with a hood.

Why Karpos

The roots of Karpos go back to 1946. That year Olindo and Irma Cremonese founded a wool spinning mill in Fonzaso, a small town at the foot of the Dolomites, today's Manifattura Valcismon. Their son Giordano Cremonese turned it into a sportswear maker, first for cross-country skiing, then for cycling. In 2007 he founded Karpos, a brand of its own for the mountains on the doorstep: ski touring, climbing, trail running and hiking.

The logo tells the story: a hand, half human, half gecko, gripping the wall. The green stands for nature. The Cremonese family is still behind the brand today.
