If you want to dig deeper
For a day trip, 15 to 30 litres is usually enough. If you sleep in huts, add spare clothes and a hut sleeping bag and you will need 30 to 45 litres. With a tent, sleeping mat and stove, start at 50 litres. If in doubt, choose the smaller one: if there is space, you will fill it.
It runs from the prominent vertebra at the base of your neck to the level of your hip bones. Tilt your head forwards to feel the vertebra. Ask someone to help you measure, as it is easy to measure at an angle on your own. The measurement is only partly related to your height.
Many models come in two back sizes, while some can be adjusted for length. If you are between sizes, an adjustable carry system is the safer choice.
A mesh back keeps the backpack away from you so air can flow through. The trade-off is that the load sits slightly further from your body. A close-fitting back carries heavy loads more steadily and suits steep terrain, but gets damp more quickly in warm weather.
Women’s models usually have a shorter back, differently shaped shoulder straps and a more angled hip belt. This helps many women, but it is not essential. Choose what fits you, including from the other range.
Mainly the capacity and carry system. Hiking backpacks usually hold up to around 45 litres and stay light. Trekking backpacks start at 50 litres and have a carry system for heavy loads, with a sturdy frame and wide hip belt.
In the mountains, it is almost always worth having one, as hardly any backpack is waterproof by itself. Some models have one built in. The backpack description will say if one is included.
That depends on your body, training and route, so there is no fixed number that suits everyone. Also consider the pack's own weight: daypacks often weigh around one kilo, while large trekking models weigh a good two.
One with a short back and suitable capacity, usually 10 to 20 litres. Buy for your child's current size, not room to grow, and only pack as much as they are happy to carry.
